This 19th-century pithari was sourced from the island of Crete, one of the oldest centers of pottery production in the Mediterranean. Its smooth, rounded form and naturally weathered surface reflect generations of use — likely stored in a courtyard or cellar where it held olive oil or wine. The sun-bleached patina and subtle mineral deposits give each side of the vessel a distinct character. Hand-sourced in Greece by The Chora Collection.
Description
Description
Pitharia are large handmade terracotta storage vessels used across Greece for centuries to preserve olive oil, wine, and grain. Produced by regional potters using local clay, most surviving examples date to the 19th century. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, shaped by hand without a mold, and varies in form, color, and texture depending on the region, clay, and potter who made it.
