A massive 19th-century Koroneiki pithari standing nearly four feet tall, with the distinctive deep horizontal ribbing — known as nekuma decoration — characteristic of the Koroni region in the southern Peloponnese. A vessel this size would have held a family's entire olive oil supply for the season. The ridged surface was not purely decorative — it strengthened the vessel walls and improved grip during transport. Traces of whitewash and ochre glaze speak to generations of outdoor use, likely half-buried in a cellar or courtyard. Pitharia of this scale are increasingly rare to find intact. This pot was sourced from the Peloponnese region. Hand-sourced in Greece by The Chora Collection.
Description
Description
Pitharia are large handmade terracotta storage vessels used across Greece for centuries to preserve olive oil, wine, and grain. Produced by regional potters using local clay, most surviving examples date to the 19th century. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, shaped by hand without a mold, and varies in form, color, and texture depending on the region, clay, and potter who made it.
