About The Object

A 19th-century two-handled Cretan wine jug with a rich, dark patina that ranges from deep charcoal to warm ochre. The blackened surface is the result of smoke exposure and mineral deposits accumulated over generations of use — likely stored near a hearth or in a stone cellar. The twin handles and narrow neck suggest this vessel was designed for pouring, not just storage, and its compact proportions made it ideal for everyday use in a rural Cretan household. This pot was sourced from Crete. Hand-sourced in Greece by The Chora Collection.

Description

Wine jugs are hand-thrown terracotta vessels used across rural Greece for storing and serving local wine. Most surviving examples date to the 19th century. Each piece reflects the traditions of the region where it was made, varying in form, handle style, and surface character depending on the local clay and the potter's hand.
